يرى «طه حسين» في هذا الكتاب أن الحضارة اليونانية القديمة بمفكريها وفنانيها الكبار كانت الرافد الأهم (بل ربما الأوحد) للحضارة الأروبية الحديثة التي استفاد جميع البشر بمنجزاتها ولكن الأمر لم يكن سهلا فقد مر الفكر الأروبي بمراحل تطور مستمرة وطويلة عبر التاريخ فمن البداوة اليونانية القحة ظهر الشعر كضرورة ليعبر الإنسان عن عواطفه وأحاسيسه ويحكي بعضا من مفاخره في صور خيالية فكانت الملاحم الشعرية الكبرى على يد «هوميروس» وغيره من كبار شعراء اليونان ثم بدأ الإنسان يستشعر حاجته لأن يدرك ويفهم ويفسر ما يحدث حوله من ظواهر وأحداث فبذل جهدا عقليا منظما ينتقد فيه كل ثابت على ضوء العقل فكانت الفلسفة التي تطورت موضوعاتها هي الأخرى وتشعبت مباحثها على أيدي الأساتذة الكبار أمثال «سقراط» و«أفلاطون» لتستمر رحلة الفكر ما تعاقب الليل والنهار.
