يتناول هذا الكتاب دراسة مقارنة بين جهود العرب الصوتية والنظريات الصوتية الحديثة، حيث يكشف المؤلف فيه سبق علماء العربية وخاصة الخليل بن أحمد الفراهيدي وإبن جني وسيبويه وريادتهم في مجال الدراسات الصوتية (الفسيولوجية والفيزيائية). يعقد المؤلف دراسة مقارنة بين نظرية الفونيم التي جاء بها العالم اللغوي الانكليزي دانيال جونز في القرن العشرين وبين نظرية الأصول والفروع في الأصوات عند إبن جني. يضع المؤلف بين يدي القارئ أصول النظريتين، بعد أن يتوصل عبر التحليل العلمي الصوتي لهما ريادة ابن جني في اكتشاف أصول نظرية الفونيم وتفاصيلها الدقيقة قبل دانيال جونز بقرون عديدة. كما يكشف الكتاب سبق الخليل بن أحمد الفراهيدي في بحث فيزيائية الصوت قبل علماء أوربا معتمدًا على حسه الصوتي المرهف وقدرته السمعية في تحليل الصوت. وبالجملة فإن هذا الكتاب يسجل ريادة العرب في مجال علم الصوت، وأهمية دراساتهم في تطوره في أوربا منذ بداية عصر النهضة حتى الوقت الحاضر.
