كان فالتر بنيامين موسوعي الثقافة ولم يكن مختصا، مدمنا على تأويل النصوص ولم يكن فيلسوفا، جميل الأسلوب عازفا عن الكتابة وغارق في التذكير بما كتبه الآخرون. ترجم من الفرنسية إلى الألمانية ولم. يعتبر ذاته مترجما. كتب دراسات لامعة عن غوته ولم تنشر وأنجز دراية طويلة عن بريشت ولم يرحب بها أحد، وعمل سنوات على كتاب عن باريس في القرن التاسع عشر لم يكمله، دون أن يكون مؤرخا... وبعد أن مات تحولت كتاباته التي لم تنشر في حياته إلى مجلدات، لم يكن شاعرا وإن عاش حياته كلها بشكلٍ شاعري.
