اعتقد المسلمون منذ فجر الرسالة الإسلامية وإلى اليوم بصحة ما بشر به النبي الأعظم \"صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم\" من ظهور رجل من أهل بيته \"عليهم السلام\" في آخر الزمان- يسمى المهدي- يملأ الأرض اقسطا وعدلا كما ملئت ظلما وجورا. وعلى ذلك كان ترقب المؤمنين وانتظارهم مهدي أهل البيت قرن فقرنا، ولم يشذ عنهم إلا شرذمة قليلة من دعاة التجديد والتحضر، نتيجة لتأثرهم بالدراسات والبحوث الاستشرافية غير الموضوعية من أمثال ما كتبه فان فلوتن، ودونالدسن، وجولدزيهر، وغيرهم من المستشرقين الذين حاولوا- بتطرفهم المعهود في التحليل والاستنتاج بخصوص ما يتصل بعقائد المسلمين- إنكار ظهور المهدي \"عليه السلام\" في آخر الزمان.
