في الرواية، يكتب الراوي تقريره إلى (يوليوس قيصر) القائد العسكري الفذ، ومحب العلم (على غرار المأمون) ويحاول الراوي أن يفسر انتحار الفيلسوف الروماني (ماركوس بوركيس كاتو) أو كاتو الأصغر، والذي انتحر بإلقاء نفسه على سيفه، بعد خسارة إحدى المعارك الكبرى، من خلال مقارنة الحادثة بانتحار سقراط بالسم، وتدوين أفلاطون للحادثة والمحاورة في كتابة (فيدون) والذي قرأه كاتو ليلة انتحاره، كتبت الرواية بلغة سهلة وبسيطة قياسا على موضوعها في شرح بعض الأفكار الفلسفية، وجاء السرد مترابطا إلى حد كبير، وزمن الرواية هو زمن الأفكار، المطلق الممتد، كما أنها كتبت بأسلوب الرسائل، حيث يظهر فيها جليا أدب مخاطبة الملوك، من انتقاء الكلمات، والاعتذار عن الخلل، والتلطف في الشرح، والثناء على علم المخاطب.
