يعد هذا الكتاب محاولة أولية لتسليط الضوء على تلك المجادلات والنقاشات الفكرية التي احتدم أوارها في بلاد شنقيط خلال القرن الثالث عشر الهجري بين أنصار المذهب الأشعري ومخالفيه والتي لم تلبث أن اتسع نطاقها لتشمل عدة قضايا أخرى واتخذت المجادلات الفكرية مظهرين أساسيين تمثل أحدهما في قرض الشعر باعتباره أداة إعلامية جماهيرية تخاطب الوجدان حيث كان هناك سعي واضح إلى كسب الولاء وتحسين الصورة. في حين جنح الآخر إلى اعتماد أسلوب المراسلة والتأليف من خلال استخدام رحابة النثر لبسط الأفكار والرؤى في مواجهة شبه الخصوم ومطاعنهم.
