هذا الكتاب هو عبارة عن مجموعة الرسائل التي أرسلها الشاب توفيق الحكيم إلى صديقه الفرنسي أندريه في زهرة عمره والرسائل كانت بالفرنسية وترجمها الكاتب الكبير لما ارتأه فيها من تسجيل لمرحلة هامة في عمره وجاءت الرسائل مذهلة أن يتراسل صديقان للحديث عن الأدب وأساليبه وأنماطه والفن وأشهر المقطوعات الموسيقية ثم يتعرضا إلى البحث عن الذات والحب ويذكر \"الحكيم\" في ذلك كثير من المواقف الشخصية والآراء التي سيطرت عليه آنذاك ويظهر ضمن الرسائل الانبهار بالأجواء الباريسية وأجواء الثقافة والفن والمتاحف هناك ومدى سوء الأحوال في الشرق بالقياس إلى ذلك.
