يناقش الكاتب والمفكر سلامة كيلة في هذا الكتاب أزمة اليسار العربي في أربعة أجزاء هي: مشكلات اليسار العربي، الفلسطيني والعراقي والسوري نموذجا، وجردة حساب لسياسات دوغمائية، والماركسية والمهمات الديمقراطية في الوطن العربي، وصولا إلى الجزء الأخير من الكتاب الماركسية. . المهمات الديمقراطية والثورة، ويرى في كتابه أن أزمة اليسار مسألة باتت قديمة، كون اليسار بات يتلاشى ويتحول إلى أحزاب هرمة ذات سياسات تميل إلى المهادنة والتكيف مع الأمر الواقع، والقبول بأقل القليل، ولكون اليسار قد تجاوز المبادئ التي تجعل منه يسارا، فسياساته المهادنة وقبوله بالأمر الواقع هما ما جعلاه يتجاوز المبادئ التي تجعله يسارا، وبالتالي سيأفل بسبب انزوائه خلف اليمين.
