ما لا شك فيه أن هذا الكتاب أثار من الجدل ما جعله يعد من أشهر كتب القرن العشرين ؛ ففيه قال المؤلف بعدم شرعية بنوة «الشعر الجاهلي» إلى عصره، وأنه منتحل من عصر صدر الإسلام. ومثلت هذه الآراء الجديدة صدمة قوية لمعاصريه، ولا زال صداها حتى اليوم مستمرا ؛ فاشتعلت المعارك القلمية بين الدكتور ومعارضيه سواء على صفحات الجرائد والمجلات أو بتأليف كتب بأكملها للرد عليه. وتعدى الأمر ذلك وأحيل الدكتور للنيابة بتهمة الإلحاد وإهانة الإسلام، غير أنه برئ منها. كل هذا لمجرد آراء حرة في الأدب كتبها «عميد الأدب العربي». وقد اتبع المؤلف «منهج البحث العلمي» في تشريحه للشعر الجاهلي، متخذا من منهج الشك ﻟ «ديكارت» أساسا لبناء نقده.
