يضم الكتاب 16 فصلا. ويتناول مسيرة الغناء فى المائة سنة الأخيرة بالنقد والتحليل، من خلال عرض الحدث السياسى كخلفية لنشوء الأغنية، التى يتحدث عنها وعن صاحبها وفيمن ولماذا كتبت، فمثلا فى الفصل الأول يروى حكاية الشاب إبراهيم الوردانى، الذى أعدم بتهمة اغتيال بطرس غالى. وذلك الأسلوب الأدبى، لا يخلو من إعلان بعض المشاعر تجاه من يتحدث عنهم، فأفصح عن محبته للشاعر يونس القاضى، والملحن بليغ حمدى، وعدم محبته لكوكب الشرق أم كلثوم مثلا، وأعتمد المؤلف فى كتابه على العديد من المراجع المتخصصة فى مجالات شتى التى أرفق عناوينها وأسماء مؤلفيها فى نهاية كل فصل.
