في هذه الرواية يبدع باموق من حيث الحبكة الروائية وسرد الأحداث ؛ فقد تمكن من عرضها بكل سلاسة ودقة لا متناهية، في وصف التفاصيل استطاع الكاتب أن يكشف ذاك الصراع النفسي لدى كل شخصيات الرواية ببراعة حيث \"كا\" بطل الرواية الذي يسعى لفهم ماجرى لصديقه. \"كا\" شاعر تركي يحضر من منفاه في ألمانيا ليقوم بتغطية حوادث الانتحار التي انتشرت في ضواحي أحد المدن النائية في تركيا لنكتشف بعدها أنه لم يرغب بالقدوم لهذه المدينة لتغطية هذه الحوادث بل ليتلقي بالجميلة\"إبيك\"، زميلته أثناء الدراسة الجامعية والتي انفصلت عن زوجها مؤخرا. يروي الراوي الأحداث من مذكرات \"كا\" نفسه، ويحاول \"س\" سد الفراغات في القصة. تتدرج الأحداث لتتداخل فيها مواضيع سياسية وصراع العلمانية مع التطرف الإسلامي، صراعات أدت بالفرد التركي للقلق، للتوق لتحديد هويته. يقضي \"كا\" أيامه في هذه المنطقة كصوفي متجول يصارع الشكوك في عقله.. هل هو مؤمن أم ملحد ؟
