صدرت مجموعة من «سلاح الفرسان» فى عام 1926، وهى تتناول فترة الحرب السوفيتية البولندية التي اندلعت أعقاب الثورة البلشفية. قصص المجموعة غير منفصلة، فهى تعتبر نموذج مبكر فى الأدب الروسى للمتتالية القصصية، التى تضم قصصا متنوعة تجمعها وحدة موضوع، وتتكرر الشخصيات فى أكثر من قصة. إنها تشكل شبكة مترابطة من الأحداث والشخصيات والوقائع. إن قراءة بابل يمكنها يقينا أن تحقق المتعة والدهشة، فهو كاتب فذ له أسلوب مميز، يكتب أدبا حديثا جدا بالنسبة إلى وقته، صالح إلى زماننا هذا لإثارة الإعجاب، وقد انتقل بالادب الروسى إلى حقبة أخرى فارق فيها الأدب حقبته القديمة من حيث طبيعة الموضوعات وطريقة عرضها.
