تتناول الرواية قصة حياة وزواج الشاعر الإنجليزي الراحل (تيد هوز) بالشاعرة الأمريكية الشهيرة (سيلفيا بلاث) التي أنهت حياتها منتحرة وتركته نهبا للشائعات والاتهامات والأكاذيب، حول علاقته بحياتها وعلاقته بحادثة انتحارها المفجعة والرواية إذ تتناول قصة الحب الاستثنائية تلك والتي دارت فصولها بين مدن أوروبا وأمريكا في منتصف خمسينيات القرن الماضي، تستعيد للأذهان أيضا عددا من قصص الحب التي تبدو شائكة دوما والتي دارت وتدور حول الأدباء أو الشخصيات العامة ولكنها تحرص على أن تقدم الحكاية بصدق وشفافية كما يوردها (تيد هوز) في قصائده، إذ تذكر (كوني بالمن) في نهاية الرواية المصادر التي اعتمدت عليها في الرواية وكان لها أن تكتفي بأنها تقدم نصا أدبيا يعتمد في الأساس على الخيال ولكنها قررت من البداية ومنذ عنوان الرواية (أنت قلت) إنها تقدم الحقيقة حتى لو كان ذلك في ثوب روائي.
