يتحدث المؤلف عن الاستشراق أنه هو دراسة علماء الغرب للشرق في جوانبه المتعددة، أما الاستغراب فهو اهتمام علماء الشرق بالحضارة الغربية في عوالمها المختلفة وإذا كان علم الاستشراق قديما اكتملت كل عناصره حتى كتب عن نهايته العديد من الباحثين الغربيين والشرقيين، فإن علم الاستغراب هو في بداية الطريق وسبقه إليه عدد من العلماء والمفكرين العرب والمسلمين المعاصرين ولا شك أن مسيرته ستكون طويلة جدا لتحقيق ما يعادل إنتاج المستشرقين في حقل الحضارة العربية والإسلامية بغض النظر عن سلبياته وإيجابياته وذلك لأسباب عديدة، أذكر منها : تشوش في الرؤية وخلل في المنهج وقلة الصبر والرباط وتشرذم الباحثين ولامبالاة أهل القرار والمال إن مادة هذا الكتاب أعدت للمساهمة في مناسبات مختلفة (محاضرات وحوارات ومقالات). وهي غالبا تشكل حوصلات لمعايشات وقراءات وتأملات، لذلك جاءت معظمها في صورة تساؤلات واستنتاجات واستشرافات
