ينير كتاب المؤرخ ابن الأثير أسئلة غير تلك التي تثيرها دراسة مؤرخي القرن الثالث الهجري (فترة التكوين) فقي الفترة الأولى يركز المؤلف على تدقيق أصول الكتابة التاريخية ومصادرها وكذا يركز على مناهجها أما في القرن السادس الهجري فإن المؤرخ يجد تراث قرون عدة من الكتابة التاريخية وفي مقدمتها تاريخ شامل مثل تاريخ الطبري الذي اعتمده ابن الأثير في تاريخ الفترات حتى نهاية القرن الثالث الهجري أما بعد القرن الثالث الهجري فقد أفاد ابن الأثير من مصادر أخرى ومؤلفات وتواريخ وسجلات ورواة وصار هو المصدر في الغالب وابن الأثير مصدر هام للقرن السادس وبعده له منهجه في التدقيق والكتابة.
