على رغم تأكيد عميد الأدب العربي طه حسين أنه \"رجل شديد الأثرة، أحب أن أكون واضحا لمعاصري ولمن يجيئون على أثري وضوحا تاما في جميع ما اختلف على نفسي من أطوار\" كما قال في مقدمة كتابه \"تجديد ذكرى أبي العلاء\" فإنه ما من شخصية فكرية حديثة أو معاصرة أثارت، قدرا كبيرا من الجدل والالتباس على نحو ما أثارت شخصية طه حسين في أطواره كلها منذ أن كان صبيا يتلقى تعليمه الأول في كتاب القرية، ومرورا بتمرده على التعليم الديني التقليدي الأزهري، وليس انتهاء بطبيعة كتاباته وفي مقدمها كتابه \"في الشعر الجاهلي، 1926\" وما أثارته من جدل عام لا يزال ممتدا إلى اليوم.
