هذه الدراسة تتناول الصلة بين الدين والدولة في المملكة العربية السعودية. ذلك أن العربية السعودية تقترن بالإسلام أكثر من أية دولة أخرى في العالم الإسلامي. وبذلك فهي موطن مكة المكرمة والمدينة المنورة، وقبلة المصلين والحجاج المسلمين. هذه هي الميزة الدينية التي عرفت بها المملكة، والتي عادت فتأكدت سنة 1745 ،عندما دخل الشيخ محمد بن عبد الوهاب في حلف مع آل سعود، حكام الدرعية، في أواسط نجد، وهذا الحلف باق إلى اليوم. الإسلام بمقتضاه دين الدولة، ومصدر الشرعية السياسية، فهو يوجه سياسات الدولة ونشاطاتها، ويصوغ مبادئ المجتمع الأخلاقية. وبناء على هذا الطابع الوهابي، تعتبر المملكة، في رأي كثيرين من المسلمين، أصولية المذهب.
