قام الأمير النمساوي ردولف برحلته لمصر والقدس في أواخر عهد الخديوي إسماعيل وقد مسح مصر من شمالها إلى جنوبها ووصف معظم المدن المصرية وأشار إشارات مفيدة للآثار ونشر ترجمات رائعة لبعض الكتابات الهيروغليفية وبعد مغادرته مصر توجه إلى حيفا ومنها زار القدس الشريف وغيرها من المزارات المقدسة ووصف الحياة البدوية حول نهر الأردن وأبدى إعجابا بروح التسامح في القدس وتعرض للمذاهب المسيحية والممارسات الطقسية المختلفة، كما أورد بعض القصص اليهودية وأبدى رأيه فيها.
