إن الرواية عبارة عن سرد لحكاية بسيطة من يوم واحد في حياة إيفان دينيسوفيتش شوكوف، السجين في معسكر الاعتقال السوفيتي لإعادة التأهيل الشهير عالميًا باسم \"الغولاق\" وهو و اسم مركب من كلمتين روسيتين تعنيان معسكر الدولة تم سجن شوكوف وهو فلاح روسي بسيط قاتل من أجل زعيمه ستالين في الحرب العالمية الثانية ضد الألمان لكنه اتهم بالخيانة -وهي جريمة لم يرتكبها- وهكذا قضى ثمانية سنوات في معسكرات الاعتقال.
