يتناول كتاب عصر الدول والإمارات (الجزائر، المغرب الأقصى، موريتانيا، السودان) تاريخ الأدب العربي، ويدخل فيه نحو ثلاثة قرون من العصر العباسي الثاني منتهيا حين أغار التتار على بغداد وقوضوا ما كان فيها من مدنية وحضارة وتلى ذلك فترة الغزو العثماني لمصر والشام والعراق، لذلك دمج المؤرخين العصر المغولي وما سمى مجازا بالعصر العثماني الذي لم يكن عصرا بالمعنى الحقيقي وإنما كان حقبة ممتدة لعصر الدول والإمارات لما أثمر عن فترة مرة أصابت العرب فيه بالانقسام والتفكك.
