يتناول الكتاب دراسة لتاريخ الإمبراطورية البيزنطية السياسي والحربي الممتد إلى أكثر من إحدى عشر قرنا ونصف من الزمان، فهى وريثة الإمبراطورية الرومانية المقدسة. كذلك ساعدها وموقعها المتميز على الاتصال الدائم بالشرق والغرب. وأصبحت لها حضارتها الخاصة والمختلفة عن الحضارة الشرقية والغربية. وكانت محط أطماع من دول الجوار مما جعلهم يقطتعون من أراضيها ما أمكنهم حتى تقلصت أراضيها وقلت مواردها فعجزت عن صد الأخطار التي حاقت بها، وسقطت في النهاية على يد الأتراك العثمانيين عام 1453 م.
