رواية لعائلة فرنسية برجوازية تخسر ثروتها ومكانتها الاجتماعية بين ليلة وضحاها، وانتحار رب الأسرة هربا من واقعه وعجزه عن سداد ديونه. ويتنكر لهم الأصدقاء والأقارب، ولأنهم تعودوا حياة العز والرفاهية وجدوا صعوبة كبيرة في التأقلم مع أوضاعهم المزرية الجديدة. فتسافر الأم وولديها أنطوانيت وأوليفييه إلى باريس، وتموت الأم بعد مدة وجيزة، فتجد أنطوانيت الفتاة جميلة المتدينة نفسها مجبرة على التضحية بشبابها لتعين شقيقها للنجاح في دراسته كي يكون مؤهلا للحياة المهنية وخلال كل تلك المدة تعاني من قسوة المجتمع نحوها والشقاء الذي تكبدته رغم صغر سنها. أما أخيها فبقي على عهده الأول ساذج، هائم في أحلامه وتخيلاته لا يقدر على شيء دون مساندة أنطوانيت لكنه برغم ذلك كان محبا ومخلصا لها.
