يرى الدارس لشعر أبي سلمى أنه حيال شخصية كونتها عوامل متعددة قد اتحدت فأثمرت هذه الشخصية التي استمدت وطنيتها من معاناة الشعب الفلسطيني، ومن تلاحمها مع الشعب في تصديه للهجمة الصهيونية الاستعمارية. إن أغراضه الشعرية صورة صادقة لشخصيته، فهو ثائر على الظلم والظالمين، حريص على وحدة الأمة ورفعة شأنها، وجاءت قصائده الوطنية والقومية تحمل البعد الفلسطيني بكل أبعاده إخلاصا وتضحية وفداء، وتحمل البعد القومي العربي بكل ما يعنيه ذلك من روح وحدوية أصيلة. إن أبا سلمى في طليعة الشعراء الفلسطيني الذين آمنوا برسالة الشعر في المجتمع، وكان أمينا صادقا في التعبير عن نفسه في كل حالاتها، ف استطاع أن يؤثر في مجتمعه الفلسطيني وأمته العربية، وصارت قصائده زادا لمن يريد أن يتحدث عن قضايا الأمة والوطن.
