یکون الغزل غرضا من الأغراض الشعریة الذي بلغ ذروته في العصر الجاهلی وعندما نطالع دواوین الشعراء الجاهلیین نصل إلی هذه الحقیقة، لأن دواوین الشعراء أهم دلیل لضبط الوقانع والمفاهیم وأیضا نجد الأغراض الأخری مثل الهجاء والمدح والرثاء والوصف وکانت هذه الأغراض تتصل بالغزل مثلا الفخر الذی أنشده عنترة في معلقته لم یکن بعیدا عن روح الغزل، حیث نری الشاعر لم یکن یفتخر للفخر ولم یکن یتمدح للمتدح بل ملء قبله وذهنه علبة ودیارها وفي النهایة افتخر بقومه، فنستطیع أن نقول بأن الدافع الأصلی للشاعر یکون الغزل.
