ممن يفتقرون إلى حسن الإدراك وعمق المعرفة، ينظرون إلى العصور الوسطى في أوربا إن كثيرا عن الواقع، فهم لا يرون في العصور الوسطى إلا بربرية القوط وهمجية نظرة تختلف كثيرا الوندال وأشباههم من شعوب الجرمان؛ ولا يريدون أن يربطوها إلا بتزمت الكنيسة وفوضى الحروب والإغارات، واستبداد الحكام والأمراء. ومن الواضح أن هذه النظرة تتجاهل ظاهرة التفاوت الحضاري بين مختلف أنحاء أوربا، والتغييرات الاقتصادية الهامة التي ألمت بالمجتمع الأوربي في العصور الوسطى، إثر تدفق التيارات الجديدة التي تحمل العلم والمعرفة من الشرق. هذا فضلا عما في هذه النظرة من تنكر صريح لما حدث في العصور الوسطى من حركات استهدفت إحياء الحضارة القديمة وابتكار عناصر حضارية جديدة ميزت تلك العصور وأعطتها بها.
