على الرغم من أن اليهود بدؤونا القتال منذ صدور قرار التقسيم عام 1947 (القرار رقم 181)، وعلى الرغم من النقص الشديد للسلاح والذخيرة بين أيدي العرب في فلسطين، وعلى الرغم من وفرة حصول اليهود على السلاح والذخيرة، وعلى الرغم من أن الولايات المتحدة- وبخاصة الرئيس ترومان- كانت قد بذلت أقصى جهودها لإصدار قرار التقسيم عام 1947، أقول : على الرغم من ذلك، فحتى آذار عام 1948 كان العرب في فلسطين متفوقين على اليهود. ومن أهم أسباب ذلك أن اليهود كانوا غير واثقين من أنفسهم، وكان عرب فلسطين يشعرون بالخطر الشديد على مستقبلهم بسبب قرار التقسيم فاستماتوا في الدفاع عن أنفسهم.
