السلطان الحائر هو اسم المسرحية التي كتبها توفيق الحكيم خريف عام 1959 م حيث كان الحكيم حينها في باريس، وكان يتفاعل مع ما مر به العالم في العقد الأخير من استخدام دولة عظمى كالولايات المتحدة القوة النووية لإنهاء الحرب العالمية الثانية، عوضا إلى الاحتكام بقوانين مجلس الأمن والأمم المتحدة التي تمثل \"المبدأ\" في الصراع السياسي الدولي. وصدرت في نفس التوقيت بالفرنسية تحت عنوان \"الاختيار\". ولعلها من أهم أعماله التي لا تزال محتفظة بسخونتها حيث كتبها منتصراً للديمقراطية والقانون، ومندداً بمنطق السيف.
