قد جال بخاطر محمد حسين هيكل منذ أن فرغ من كتابه «حياة محمد» أن يقوم بدراسات في التاريخ الإسلامي، وقد أغراه إلى ذلك الأمر حجم التأثير الذي تركته تعاليم النبي العربي - صلى الله عليه وسلم - في كافة مناحي الحضارة الإسلامية، وامتداد ذلك التأثير مكانا وزمانا ؛ حيث امتدت المساحة الجغرافية للدولة الإسلامية من أقصى حدود المغرب الأندلسي، إلى حدود المشرق الصيني، كذلك امتد تأثيرها الزمني إلى ما يزيد على الثلاثة عشر قرنا. وقد جاءت دراسة هيكل في الكتاب الذي بين أيدينا تأريخا لأحد أبرز الشخصيات الإسلامية التي ساهمت بقدر كبير في تأسيس قواعد الدولة الإسلامية، وهي شخصية «أبي بكر الصديق» باعتبارها أول شخصية أسندت إليها مسئولية الحكم عقب وفاة النبي الكريم صلى الله عليه وسلم.
