يشتمل هذا الكتاب على ثلاث دراسات مستقلة ومتداخلة في آن واحد للمؤرخ الفرنسي البارز \"هنري لورنس\" نشرت بين عامي (1989 و1995) تتناول هذه الدراسات جوانب من التاريخ الكولونيالي للعالم العربي الحديث والمعاصر وتبرز دور المغامر والمستشرق في مجريات اللعبة الكبري من أجل السيطرة على الشرق. الدراسة الأولي تكرس للفارس \"دولا سكاريس\" (1774-1817) والثانية عن \"توماس إدوارد لورانس\" (1888-1925) والشهير بلورانس العرب. أما الدراسة الثالثة فهي مكرسة للمستشرق الفرنسي المعروف لويس ماسينيون (1883-1926) الذي شارك في صياغة السياسة الفرنسية حيال العالم الإسلامي في عهد الجمهورية الثالثة.
