ولد مكيافيللي (1469-1527) لأسرة عريقة من الطبقة المتوسطة، وقد اشتهر بكتابه «الأمير» مع إنه لم يكن هو نفسه أميرا بل عمل كأحد أفراد الحاشية الملكية وكدبلوماسي لجمهورية فلورنسا وحظى بقدر لا بأس به من الشهرة في عصره باعتباره كاتبا للمسرحيات والقصائد الشعرية الماجنة تؤكد حوادث التاريخ أن تصاريف الدهر ليس لها أمان فقد وجد مكيافيللي نفسه فور عودة «المديشيون» إلى تولي الحكم مطرودا من الحكومة التي طالما خدمها لعقود ونفي من مسقط رأسه وفي هذه السيرة الجديدة الرائعة ينقذ روس كينج ميراث مكيافيللي من التعرض للسخرية اللاذعة باسطا تفاصيل القرائن السياسية والاجتماعية المضطربة التي أثرت على فكره وملقيا الضوء على الجانب الإنساني لأحد أبرع المفكرين السياسين الذين عرفهم التاريخ.
