ذاع صيت هذا الكتاب وانتشر بين الفلاسفة ونقل إلى اللاتينية وتأثر به مفكرو أوروبا يخاطب ابن سينا طائفة من الإخوان الذين لهم حرص على اقتباس المعارف الحكمية ويشرع ابن سينا بعد ذلك بتعريف النفس فيقول \"إنها كمال أول لجسم طبيعي آلي ذي حياة بالقوة\" ولما كان غرض ابن سينا البحث في النفس الإنسانية بوجه خاص ومعرفة بقائها ومعادها فلذلك أشار إلى النفس اللبنانية وقواها ووظائفها كما أوجز القول في حركة الحيوان وأطنب في وصف القوى المدركة كما وقف عند القوى الباطنة كما تطرق ابن سينا إلى القوى المدركة ويبين كيف تتكون المعقولات أو كيف يدرك العقل الكليات كما يتحدث عن مراتب الإدراك ويتحدث أيضا عن حاجة النفس إلى البدن ويبرهن على أن الإدراك العقلي ليس بآلة.
