كانت الفكرة لهذا الكتاب أن يكون عنوانه صحافة المحافظات في العراق ولكن بعض المختصين رأى أن يختص الكتاب بصحافة النجف فقط لما لهذه المدينة من أثر ملحوظ في ثقافة العراق ولأنها شهدت منذ وقت مبكر نهضة صحفية تمثلت في صور مجلة العلم عام 1910 م، يعالج الكتاب البيئة الثقافية لمدينة النجف وظهور الطباعة والصحافة فيها والتطور العام لصحافة النجف والاتجاهات الفكرية في صحافة النجف وهي في الواقع إتجاهات عديدة منها الإتجاه الأدبي والسياسي والديني والاجتماعي.
