جعل الدكتور \"زكي نجيب محمود\" اهتمامه الأول في هذا الكتاب التفرقة بين ما يمكن قبوله وما لا يمكن قبوله في مجال القول العلمي وحده دون سائر المجالات، مؤيدا الفكرة القائلة بأنه لا يجوز للفيلسوف أن يكون واصفا للكون أو أي جزء منه، بل تتلخص مهمته في تحليل ما يقوله العلماء، ضاربا المثل بالفيلسوف الألماني \"إيمانويل كانت\" بوصفه محللا فلسفيا وفيلسوفا نقديا كبيرا، وحين الحديث عن الميتافيزيقا فضل المؤلف أن يحدد ما يرفضه منها، مفردا في نهاية الكتاب عرضا لطرائق التحليل عند الفلاسفة المعاصرين.
