يعرض شكسبير فيها ببراعة الشاعر المسرحى القدير انهيار مذهب الحق الإلهى للملوك فى القرن الرابع عشر وبزوغ سلطة البرلمان، مع ما صاحب ذلك من رجة فكرية زلزلت أركان المجتمع القروسطى ممثلا فى شخصية ريتشارد الثانى نفسه ترجم المسرحية الدكتور \"محمد عناني\" وقدم لها بمقدمة وافية عن المسرحية والعصر الذى تتناوله والمذاهب النقدية الحديثة اللازمة لتفهمها مثل \"التاريخية الجديدة\" و\"المادية الثقافية\" مع رصد الإختلاف فى زاوية النظر إلى المسرحية منذ عرضها على المسرح ومعاناتها من الرقابة فى عصر الملكة إليزابيث وحتى الآن.
