هذا الكتاب هو مجموعة مقالات مسلية وعميقة في آن واحد يتناول فيها توفيق الحكيم موضوع الأدب وتأثيره ودوره في الحياة حيث إن إهمال التكوين الثقافي وعدم الإحاطة بالمعرفة من منابعها الأولى إلى آخر ما وصلت إليه كل هذا قد أدى إلى شئ كثير من التخبط والخلط وسوء التطبيق لهذا الأدب الجديد «أدب الحياة »، مما نتج عنه قيام صيحات الاستخفاف أو الارتياب أو التجريح ضد هذا الاتجاه والداعين إليه، حتى كادت تضيع قضيتهم إذا أرادوا إذن انتصار فعليهم أن يتجنبوا الخفة والتسرع وأن يتمسكوا بالصبر والجلد وأن يشيدوا على العمل والجهد والأطلاع.
