تجربة روائية تعكس غني اللغة الأفريقية التعبيري، ففي هذه الرواية يحاول \"غابرييل أوكارا\" إثبات أن بإمكان الكاتب استخدام العبارات الاصطلاحية في لفته، هو بحث تكون قابلة للفهم بالإنكليزية وهي اللغة التي كانت وسيلة من وسائل التعبير الأساسية للأدباء الأفريقيين ويذكر أن الكاتب الذي يكتفي باستخدام المعادل الإنكليزي لذلك العبارات الاصطلاحية، هو لن يكون معبرا من صور وأفكار أفريقية وإنما عن صور وأفكار إنكليزية، لذا فقد خاض الروائي في الصوت تجربة البحث عن معادل لغوي وشكلي حديث للرؤيا الأفريقية، يروي قصة \"اوكولو\" أو \"الصوت\" بلفته التي لم تقف عند حدود الحروف والألفاظ بل تعدتها إلى خلق مناخ روائي تشيع في سردياته الروح الأفريقية المعبرة عن معاناة حقيقية للفرد في مجتمعه الأفريقي ذو السمات الخاصة ...
