للبدو شأن في نشأة الإسلام وتاريخه وفتوحه وآدابه وتراثه. ويتناول هذا الكتاب البدو حيث كتبه عدد من أعلام المستشرقين وأحاطوا بهذا الموضوع المتشعب إحاطة شاملة، فتحدثوا عن بيئة البدو وطبيعتهم وتاريخهم وعقائدهم وثقافتهم، ثم فصلوا الكلام عن أصل البداوة من الوجهة الجغرافية، وبداوة الماعز والأغنام، والبدوي على ظهر الجواد، وظهور بداوة الجمل في شمالي أفريقية، والبداوة في الجزيرة العربية عامة، والبداوة قبل الإسلام، ثم مصادر هذه البداوة، وتاريخها، والروابط السياسية لها، والنظرة الأخلاقية عند البدو، ثم دينهم.
