إذا كان من الممكن رسم قاعدة واحدة للشعر يصبح ممكنا رسم قاعدة واحدة لفهمه وتحليله ! ولما كان قانون الشعر هو الشعر نفسه، فكذلك فهمه وتحليله ونحن نعلم أن للحقيقة المادية حدودا وأبعادا تسهل معرفتها، بعكس الكلمة التي لا يحدها سوى أمرين : ثقافة المتكلم وثقافة السامع، فكيف إذا كانت هذه ثقافة المتكلم وثقافة السامع، فكيف إذا كانت هذه الكلمة شعرية بمعنى أنها تطمح إلى جعل اللغة تقول ما لم تتعود أن تقوله وبالتالي يسهل علينا تصور مدى تغير الشعر وأساليب تحليله أهمية هذا الكتاب تكمن في أنه يقدم لنا عرضا تاريخيا لتصورات فهم الشعر وتحليله منذ العصور القديمة وصولا إلى آخر المناهج النقدية الحديثة وبالتالي فلا غنى عنه لكل مهتم بهذا الموضوع.
