يهدف هذا الكتاب إلى تزويد القارئ بمراجعة واسعة لميدان متلازمة داون حيث تعتبر متلازمة داون من أكثر المتلازمات شيوعا وأكثرها سهولة في التعرف على خصائصها هذا إضافة إلى أنها من أكثر المتلازمات التي حظيت بالبحث والاهتمام، ولقد كان أول من حدد وتعرف على هذه المتلازمة هو جون لانجدون داون عام 1866، وهي معروفة بأنها من أكثر الأسباب الجينية المسببة للإعاقة العقلية. تؤثر هذه المتلازمة على المعالم النمائية الرئيسية للشخص المصاب بها، ومن أكثر الأسباب المؤدية لها هو ما يعرف باسم التثليث الكروموسومي لكروموسوم 21.
