تمثل شهادة حسين الشافعي عضو مجلس قيادة ثورة 23 يوليو/تموز عام 1952 في مصر ونائب رئيس الجمهورية الأسبق، مرحلة تاريخية هامة من تاريخ مصر الحديث تمتد إلى أكثر من خمسة وثلاثين عاما وتتنوع المراحل التاريخية فيها من الاحتلال البريطاني لمصر، مرورا بالحرب العالمية الثانية التي شارك فيها الشافعي، إلى حرب العام 1948 إلى ثورة العام 1952، إلى تأميم قناة السويس وحرب العام 1956، إلى الوحدة بين مصر وسوريا بين عامي 1958 إلى العام 1961 ثم التدخل المصري في اليمن والصراع بين عبد الناصر وعبد الحكيم عامر العام 1967، وإعادة بناء الجيش المصري ووفاة عبد الناصر وتفاصيل اختيار السادات، ثم حرب أكتوبر ومراحل الإعداد لها، ثم خلافه مع السادات وخروجه من السلطة عام 1975.
