يقول المؤلف في مقدمته لهذا الكتاب : لا أهدف من هذه الدراسة إلى تقديم عرض شامل أو مفصل لتاريخ العرب في العصر السابق للإسلام. وإنما أردت أن تكون مدخلا حضاريا لهذا التاريخ يمكننا من فهمه في اطاره السليم، لا كحشد من الأحداث والأسماء والأوضاع تسرد كمقدمة مطولة لعصر لاحق، وإنما ككيان تاريخي يمتد عبر ستة عشر قرنا في الحدود المعروفة لنا حتى الآن والتي تتسع من يوم إلى يوم كلما عثر المنقبون على أثر جديد أو على مجموعة من النقوش، وينتمي إلى عصر له أبعاده المميزة ومقوماته وعلاقاته وتياراته التي تتفق وهذه الأبعاد.
