Overview
أحد الكتب المقدسة الهندوسية القديمة، ويحتوي على معلومات عن الحقيقة السامية وأسطورة الخلق، ويعد المرجع الرئيسي للسلطة الدينية للهندوس. وهذه النصوص لم تعرفها اللغة العربية في أي عصر من عصورها، بل بما لم تسمع الثقافة العربية بها منذ العهد العباسي حتى اليوم. فحسب الوثائق التاريخية، أقَدم محمد بن أحمد البيروني في العصر العباسي على ترجمة جزء من «بهاجافاد جيتا»، ولكن لسوء الحظ ضاعت مخطوطته ولم يعثر عليها حتى اليوم. يقول المؤلف في مقدمة كتابه : «إ ن الوثائق التاريخية والنصوص التي بحوزتنا لا تمكننا من حصر الأشخاص من فلاسفة أو مؤرخين الذين كتبوا عن الأوبانيشاد. إلا أننا توصلنا حاليا لتعداد وجرد مئة وثمانية كتاب، ومما تجدر ملاحظته أن هذه الكتابات أو الأدبيات اختلفت من حيث غزارة المادة أو من حيث الشكل.
