ترجع علاقة العرب والمسلمين بأوروبا إلى بدايات القرن الثامن الميلادي، وقد انطبعت هذه العلاقة باللامبالاة في خلال حقبات طويلة، لكنها تبدلت، خصوصا في الحقبة المعاصرة؛ إذ أدى التقدم الأوروبي إلى انقلاب هذه اللامبالاة إلى إعجاب والأخذ بما أحرزته أوروبا في الأفكار والعلوم والتقنيات. إلا أن العقود الأخيرة شهدت انحسار تأثير أوروبا والغرب، خصوصا في مجال الأفكار، الأمر الذي يحتم على العرب إنتاج أفكارهم بأنفسهم، وهذا ما سعى المؤلف إلى معالجته في كتابه هذا الذي يضم الأعمال التالية: - اكتشاف التقدم الأوروبي. - تطور النظرة الإسلامية إلى أوروبا. - لم يعد لأوروبا ما تقدمه للعرب.
