يختصر المؤلف على لسان بطل الرواية كريم في بوذا الضواحي معاناة الجيل الثاني من المهاجرين إلى بريطانيا، وعالمهم العاصف والمتناقض إذ يصف كريم حاله وحال صديقته جميلة كالآتي، في بعض الأحيان كنا فرنسيين وأحيانا أخرى كنا أسودين أمريكيين، وفي واقع الأمر كان يفترض أن نكون إنجليزيين، لكن بالنسبة إلى الإنجليز كنا دوما زنجيين وباكيين (باكستانيين) ومن خلال هذا الوصف يثير الكاتب مجموعة كبيرة من القضايا أهمها مسألة الإنتماء الذي لا يمكن تحديده بمولد أحدهم على أرض معينة ولا بالجنسية التي يكتسبها.
