يصور لنا الكاتب عالمين متنافرين، كل منهما لا يستطيع أن يفهم الأخر لأن الهوة بينهما سحيقة. وجدير بالذكر أن خبرة تركيتى واسعة بالجنوب وواقعه المعقد والمتشابك، لأنه عاش وتعرف عن كثب على أحوال أهل الجنوب، فلقد التحق بالجيش وشارك في عمليات قمع حرب العصابات بجنوب إيطاليا وانضم إلى المفوضية العسكرية هناك. ومن خلال رفض القوالب الصارمة التي يفرضها نظام الدولة في الحياة الاجتماعية والسياسية والتي صنف بها ما يسمى بالمدنية واللامدنية، يصف الكاتب بأسلوب تلقائي الطبيعة البكر في الجنوب، الوجه الساذج للبشر، الصورة النقية والتلقائية لحضارة الفلاح في الجنوب.
