يرصد الكاتب محمد عبد المولى في هذه الرواية \"شيء اسمه الحنين\" الواقع الإجتماعي والسياسي لبلاده في ثلاثينيات القرن العشرين فيسلط الضوء على حياة اليمنيين ومعاناتهم في مرحلة تاريخية معينة عاشها الكاتب أو سمع بها فرصدها بعين المؤرخ والروائي معا وأعاد إنتاجها فنيا بواسطة القصة القصيرة وهو يفعل ذلك من خلال شخصيات ضاقت ذرعا بحياة القرية وأهلها وعاداتهم وتقاليدهم فهي عنده ترادف النوم في منتصف النهار والكسل والسأم وتخزين القات هذه المظاهر شكلت مادة واقعية للحكايات.
