يتحدث الكتاب عن تاريخ مدينة دمشق حيث تعتبر دمشق من أقدم مدن العالم بل هي أول عاصمة مأهولة في التاريخ الإنساني، وذهب البعض للقول أن دمشق أقدم مدينة ظهرت على وجه الأرض حيث يعود ظهورها إلى ما بعد عصر طوفان نوح عليه السلام ذاته أي منذ حوالي تسعة آلاف عام كما دلت الحفريات بالقرب من منها في موقع تل الرماد ولسور المدينة سبعة أبواب في العهد الروماني أما على السور الغربي فإن الأبواب كانت تزيد وتنقص بين الحين والآخر كلما جدد السور فتسد أبواب وتفتح أبواب أخرى.
