يتحدث الكتاب عن تاريخ المماليك فهم مجموعة من سكان القبائل الذين اشترتهم الدولة الايوبية في عهد ملكها الصالح أيوب عند تبوئه عرش مصر وقد منحهم حرية كبيرة لدرجة أن تلك الحرية انعكست سلبا على أهالي مصر الذي بدأ يضجر منهم ومن تصرفاتهم وذلك بسبب تنامي قوتهم وسطوتهم وعبثهم بشؤون الناس أما عن أصول المماليك فان أكثرهم يرجعون لأصول سلافية كانت تسكن بلاد القفقاس (جنوب روسيا) وفي شمال ووسط أسيا وسيبيريا وبلاد ما وراء النهر.
