ترجع أهمية فكر ابن عربي إلى أنه يمثل حالة نضج في الفكر الإسلامي في مجالاته العديدة، من فقه ولاهوت وفلسفة وتصوف، هذا فضلاً عن علوم \"تفسير القرآن\" وعلوم \"الحديث النبوي\" وعلوم اللغة والبلاغة ومن هذه الزاوية فإن دراسته في السياق الإسلامي يكشف عن بانوراما الفكر الإسلامي في القرنين السادس والسابع الهجريين (الحادي عشر والثاني عشر الميلاديين) ومن زاوية أخرى ويمثل الشيخ الأكبر محيي الدين بن عربي همزة الوصل بين التراث العالمي والتراث الإسلامي، ومن هذه الزاوية يمكن النظر لتراث ابن عربي بوصفه تواصلاً حياً خلاقاً مع التراث العالمي الذي كان معروفا ومتداولا في عصره، سواء كان تراثا دينيا، مسيحيا أو يهوديا، أو كان تراثا فلسفيا فكريا.
