من أبرز الكتب التي ألفها كولن تيرنر، وهو كتاب غاية في الأهمية لكل مهتم بتاريخ الفكر الإسلامي، حيث يركز المؤلف جهوده على تحليل الفكر الشيعي في منعطف رئيس له، ألا وهو المنعطف الصفوي في واحد من أبرز مظاهره وهو شخصية العلامة محمد باقر المجلسي، والكتاب مكون من خمسة فصول، يتناول الفصل الأول مراجعة لمفهومي الإيمان والإسلام، والفصل الثاني يخصصه المؤلف للحديث عن الدين في إيران القروسطية وبرزوغ نجم الصفويين، والفصل الثالث يعالج فيه المؤلف ترسيخ السلطة الصفوية ونهوض البرانية الإمامية، والفصل الرابع يفرده للحديث عن العلامة المجلسي، ويختتم بفصل هام عن عقيدتا الانتظار والرجعة.
